Air Commodore Camillus Bertram Labrooy was born in Kandy in July 1966. He was educated at St. Peters College Colombo and bid farewell to his schooling career in 1985 on completion of the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level examination. During his schooling career he represented his college in Cricket and athletics and was Sergeant of the Cadet Platoon. He joined the Sri Lanka Air Force in the year 1986 and was commissioned as a Pilot Officer in the Administrative Regiment Branch in December 1987.
He has served in many SLAF establishments and held a number of key appointments in both training stations and operational deployments. Some of the key appointments held were Chief Instructor Recruit Training and Chief Instructor Cadet Training at the prime combat training establishment of the Air Force located in Diyatalawa, Commanding Officer Combat Training School Sri Lanka Air Force Academy China Bay Staff Officer I at the Directorate of Ground Operations, Staff Officer Training II at the Directorate of Training at AFHQ and as the Senior Air Force Staff Officer at the Joint Operation Headquarters. He also held the appointment of Chief Provost Marshal of the SLAF.
In the operational front he served in the eastern and northern sectors as Officer Commanding of an operational detachment in the East, Commanding Officer of the Regiment Wing at Sri Lanka Air Force Station Palaly in 1994/1995, Group Commander of Special Operations Group Vanni from 1999 to 2001 and once again in 2009/2010 and Commanding Officer of the Combat Training School, SLAF, Diyatalawa.
Air Commodore CB Labrooy has followed a number of overseas training courses viz Officers Weapon and Junior Officers Leadership Course at Officers Training School (OTS) Mangla and School of Infantry & Tactics Quetta Pakistan in 1987, Basic Staff Course at PAF Base Badaber, Pakistan in 1997, Large Scale Sudden Disaster Training in Israel, Senior Staff Course in PAF Air War College, Karachchi in 2007 and holds a Masters in Management Sciences from the Osmania University Hyderabad, India and is also a graduate of the College of Defence Management Scundarabad, India having followed the Higher Defence Management Course(HDMC) at the College of Defence Management (CDM) Secundarabad, India in 2011/2012 and National Defence Course (ndc) in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2017. He also participated as a Working Observer in the joint military exercise ‘OPERATION COPETHUNDER’ in Alaska, USA.
Amongst the local training courses he has followed the certificate course in International Relations from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies and a course on Counseling with special emphasis on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.
Air Commodore CB Labrooy has been decorated with the Weera Wickrama Vibushanaya (WWV) and Rana Soora Padakkama (RSP) and Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP) amongst many other military decorations.
He is presently the Chairman of the indigenous martial art of ‘Angampora’ after having pioneered the introduction of the art to the Sri Lanka Air Force in 2012.
Air Commodore CB Labrooy is happily married to Rosie and they are blessed with a son and two daughters aged 24, 22 and 18 years respectively
