Commodore Lalith Dissanayake was born on 08 Oct 1965 and studied at the Pinnawala Central College in Kegalle. He is a prominent character, who excelled in both studies and sports during school time. He joined the Sri Lanka Navy as an Officer Cadet in 1986 and underwent training at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee. On completion of two years successful training period, he was commissioned as an Acting Sub Lieutenant in 1988 in the Executive Branch. Subsequently, he was promoted to ranks of Sub Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain and finally to Commodore on 01 Jul 12.
He has followed numerous courses and programmes locally and abroad in China, Fiji, India, Pakistan and USA. Commodore Lalith Dissanayake is a distinguished graduate of the Army Command and Staff College in Sri Lanka and holds a Master Degree in Public Administration at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has also participated in numerous seminars/ workshops on Disaster Management, Federal Idea in Sri Lanka and Staff Talks between Indian Navy & Sri Lanka Navy in 2012 in India. He has also visited Russia, Ukraine and Thailand for various official commitments.
During his 32 years of illustrious and unblemished naval career he has commanded many ships/ craft and shore establishments. He has served onboard Long Patrol Boat, Fast Attack Craft, Fast Gun Boat and Fast Missile Vessel and subsequently has commanded same vessels. He held some Instructional appointments, as an Officer Instructor at the Naval & Maritime Academy, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy, Commandant/Commanding Officer of SLNS Shiksha in Poonewa and Deputy Area Commander (Southern Naval Command)/Commandant of SLNS Nipuna.
Further, he has held Staff Officer appointments, to name a few as Staff Officer (Weapons), Deputy Director Naval Training, Acting Director Naval Personnel, Director Naval Welfare, Director Naval Weapons at Naval Headquarters. In addition to above he also served as Director General Coordinating at the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff.
He has been awarded Uththama Sewa Padakkama for his unblemished service, Sri Lanka Armed Service Long Service Medal & Clasp, Sri Lanka Navy 50th Anniversary Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Commemoration Medal, North & East Operational Medal, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal, North Humanitarian Operation Medal and East Humanitarian Operation Medal. He was appraised three times by the Commander of the Navy for remarkable performances. He is a member of the Sri Lanka Navy Tennis Team and captained the team for two year tenure. He also holds a Justice of Peace (Whole Island) post & also a PIM Alumni.
Commodore Lalith Dissanayake is married to Dr (Mrs) Janaki Dissanayake, a Consultant of Transfusion Physician and blessed with a daughter studied at Meusaeus College, Colombo 7 and a son studying at Royal College, Colombo 7.
