The objectives of the exercise Rock Apes are to develop the Student Officers’ knowledge on the Mechanics of Ground Defence and make understand the responsibilities of Air Base Defence environment in an Airbase. Practice of writing a formal Ground Defence Plan and brief the same to the higher commanders are also priorities in the exercise.
Exercise Rock Apes is conducted in the third term as per the course curriculum on completion of Air Base Defence lectures. The exercise scenario was designed with a hypothetical situation and Air Student Officers were grouped into two syndicates. Each group represented the same composition of Staff Officers at Sri Lanka Air Force Bases and tasked to develop Air Base Defence Plans for the captured Air Base of “Videsh Air Force” situated in Pulmoodai area.
The exercise for the course No.17 unfolded in two phases. 1st phase: a series of lectures were conducted by visiting Air Force Officers on Air Base Defence from 25 to 27 Sep 23 followed by a central discussion at DSCSC. The 2nd phase which included an air reconnaissance over the actual exercise area and field visit to the Air Base Defence infrastructures at the Air Force Academy China Bay by the Student Officers was commenced on 27 Sep 23 and concluded on 02 Oct 23. The two groups of Student Officers were provided with two sorties of MI17 helicopter to carry out the air recce on 28 Oct 23. Subsequently, presentations on Critical Analysis and model briefings on formulated Air Base Defence plans were conducted by the two groups on 01 and 02 Oct 23 at DSCSC.
A social gathering was held on 28 Sep 23 at Marble Beach Resort, China Bay with the participation of the Commandant, SLAF Academy China Bay, Directing Staff and Student Officers.
