The Defence Services Command and Staff College successfully hosted a high-level seminar on “Countering Violent Extremism (CVE)” as part of its third term curriculum on 29 Aug 2026. The half-day event, running from 0800 to 1250 hours, aimed to empower the next generation of military leaders with the advanced knowledge required to tackle contemporary global security threats. The seminar brought together expert speakers from Army, Navy, and Police intelligence sectors to brief the Course Participants of course number 20.
KEY SESSIONS AND EXPERT SPEAKERS
Understanding drivers and pathways to radicalization – Lt Col Dinesh Ranasingha MIC (Chief Instructor, School of Military Intelligence, Karandeniya).
Early risk assessment and inter-agency coordination – Cdr (INF) KHHE Hiran Kodagoda.
Online extremism and recruitment and community engagement and resilience – Senior Superintendent of Police Gamini Wickramaarachchi (the Director /Foreign Affairs Division State Intelligence Service).
FOSTERING ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT
The presentations were followed by an interactive panel discussion, where Course Participants engaged in a dynamic question and answer session with the experts. The student officers demonstrated a highly proactive approach, raising critical questions on modern asymmetric warfare and local security frameworks.
The seminar concluded successfully, meeting all institutional objectives and providing the future leadership of the armed forces with vital, actionable insights into national security.
