EXERCISE TRIDENT 2026

Exercise Trident is a standard naval estimate writing exercise conducted in a realistic and dynamic operational environment. The exercise is based on a scenario in which an adversary seeks to disrupt Sri Lanka’s development objectives and create fear and uncertainty among the general public through hostile activities and terrorist attacks. Exercise Trident 2026 was conducted from 01 to 05 September 2026 at the Naval Dockyard, Trincomalee. The exercise was conducted individually by naval Course Participants (CPs) and incorporated a Red Ink Correction (RIC) assessment. During the exercise, CPs assumed the roles of Operations Staff Officers and were required to analyse a series of evolving situations, assess threats, evaluate available options and formulate appropriate plans to counter adversary actions.

The exercise was supported by a series of operationally relevant activities conducted at the Naval Dockyard. CPs received comprehensive briefings from the Command Operations Staff (East) and visited key security locations within the Dockyard, including the Trincomalee Inner Harbour. These activities provided CPs with a practical appreciation of the operational environment and enabled them to apply the Naval Planning Process in a realistic setting. The progressive nature of the scenario further required CPs to reassess the situation, modify their plans and take timely decisions in response to changing circumstances.

Adding further significance to the exercise, the Commandant of the Defence Services Command and Staff College, Major General KW Jayaweera USP psc, visited the exercise on 04 September 2026. During his visit to the Naval Dockyard, the Commandant highlighted the importance of Exercise Trident in developing operational readiness, effective coordination and sound decision-making among future military leaders.

The successful conduct of Exercise Trident 2026 was facilitated by the continuous guidance and mentorship provided by the Commandant and Faculty, together with the dedicated support of the Coordinating Wing throughout the planning and conduct of the exercise. Overall, the exercise provided CPs with an opportunity to practically apply the naval estimate process, develop appropriate responses to an evolving operational situation and enhance their ability to function effectively as Operations Staff Officers.
