New Year is celebrated to reflect the past year while welcoming the new. It is generally celebrated on 13 April or 14 April and traditionally begins at the sighting of the new moon. According to Sinhalese astrology, New Year begins when the sun moves from Meena Rashiya to Mesha Rashiya and it also marks the end of the harvest season.The first signs of spring remind Sri Lankans that it is time for a spectrum of festivities encompassing many interesting customs, delicious traditional sweetmeats, food and fun activities.
Giving prominence to the customs, rituals as well as traditional games, Course No 17 of DSCSC also organized the New Year festival at the College premises on 01 April 2023, just before the termination of the 1st Term, with the participation of all Student Officers, Faculty Members, Permanent Staff and their families in traditional attire. Major General BKGML Rodrigo Rsp, psc, IG the Commandant, DSCSC graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
The festival consisted of traditional events, including games, songs and dances, and the traditional Gami gedera, Korale Arachchi and Gama Hamine added more glamour to the event. All members of the DSCSC, including foreign Student Officers, took part in the events enthusiastically. This event bestowed an ideal opportunity for the Student Officers and their families to freely mingle with the college’s local and international coursemates and the Faculty and Permanent Staff.
