Exercise SLEDGEHAMMER, which is a one-sided free play Command Post planning exercise, took place in the Defence Services Command and Staff College premises from 25 September to 2 October 2023. This is one of the major exercises for Army Student Officers where they plan and conduct a wargame by themselves.
The aim of the exercise SLEDGEHAMMER was to practice Student Officers in planning counterinsurgency operations in tactical level and planning, organizing and conducting of a Command Post Exercise (CPX). During the exercise more emphasis was given for conducting briefings, back briefing, oral orders and effective functioning of Control headquarters and Player headquarters.
The exercise culminated with a Command Post Exercise based on plans produced by Student Officers and a media conference. Student Officers displayed great enthusiasm to conduct the wargame since this was the first time they manned the Control headquarter. Student Officers’ plans were effectively tried and tested during the CPX. At the end of the CPX, Student Officers conducted a realistic press briefing before a set of Journalists. This briefing paved the way for them to understand the conduct of themselves in the domain of media, and the art of handling journalists. Army Student Officers concluded the exercise with a RIC.
