HER EXCELLENCY JULIE J CHUNG AMBASSADOR OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO SRI LANKA ADDRESSES THE DINERS’ CLUB AT THE DEFENCE SERVICES COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE_2025

On 23 July 2025, the Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) held the Diners’ Club event for the Term 2 of the Course No. 19 at the Officers’ Mess. The evening brought together the Commandant, Wing Heads, Directing Staff, Permanent Staff, Course Participants and their spouses. Her Excellency Julie J Chung, Ambassador of the United States of America to Sri Lanka, delivered a lecture on ‘Importance and Connection of Economic Security in Broader National Security’.

The lecture underscored critical connection between economic security and national security highlighting contemporary challenges faced by Sri Lanka in terms of fiscal condition, debt re-structuring and management, international cooperation, transparency and accountability, long term sustainability and social safety nets etc. The ambassador’s speech provided valuable perspectives on how economic factors can impact national security strategies and the importance of economic sustainability in maintaining and exercising sovereign rights of a nation.

Following the lecture, an interactive session allowed participants to share their ideas with Her Excellency Julie J Chung. Her Excellency was the first ever US ambassador to address a Diners’ Club event in the history of DSCSC. The event exemplified the College’s commitment to fostering high-caliber, professional military education and promoting strategic discourse among its members.

The Commandant of the Defence Services Command and Staff College presented a memento to the Guest Speaker at the conclusion of the speech to appreciate her presence and to mark her maiden visit to the College.
