DEFENCE SERVICES COMMAND AND STAFF COLLEGE - SRI LANKA
To War with Wisdom and Knowledge
THE EXERCISE UPPERCUT DSCSC – 20

‘Exercise UPPERCUT’, the inaugural major tactical exercise of the Army Wing at the Defence Services Command and Staff College, was successfully conducted for Course Participants of Course Number 20 from 5 to 12 May 2026.

The primary objective of the exercise was to equip Course Participants with practical experience in planning brigade-level offensive operations. Proceedings began with detailed syndicate room discussions, which guided participants progressively through the systematic planning process. This was followed by a Tactical Exercise Without Troops (TEWT) at Narammala, where Course Participants had the opportunity to validate their plans against the actual terrain and develop a deeper understanding of the operational challenges and realities inherent in offensive operations.

The exercise reached its conclusion with a Red Ink Correction (RIC), providing Course Participants the chance to critically test and refine their theoretical understanding of offensive operations.

Both local and foreign Course Participants from the Army Wing, alongside the Directing Staff, actively participated in the exercise. The activity fostered a highly effective learning environment and substantially enhanced Course Participants’ knowledge of the integrated application of various arms during the planning of offensive operations.
