‘Exercise CONCRETE JUNGLE’ Successfully Concludes: Enhancing Joint Operational Planning in Urban Terrain.
‘Exercise CONCRETE JUNGLE’ which is an Army – Air joint tactical exercise focused on Operations in Built-Up Areas (OBUA), was successfully concluded on 23 May 2026. This exercise was conducted over a span of six days from 18 to 23 May 2026 and this annual exercise brought together Course Participants from the Army and Air Wings of the DSCSC to jointly plan and execute offensive and defensive operations in an urban environment.
The primary objective of the exercise was to deepen Course Participants’ understanding of the planning considerations, concepts, tactics and procedures required for effective conduct of urban operations. It was structured as a tutorial exercise where the Course Participants engaged in the planning and coordination of both attack and defence operations at the brigade level, with an emphasis on integrating air support in land operations.
This joint initiative offered Course Participants the opportunity to collaboratively develop operational plans against a generic adversary in an urban setting. The exercise encompassed mission analysis, non-tactical air and ground reconnaissance from both friendly and enemy perspectives, estimate/appreciation writing, syndicate discussions and a Tactical Exercise Without Troops (TEWT) conducted in the Kurunegala area. The scenario-driven approach provided a valuable platform for Course Participants to translate theoretical knowledge into practical application on realistic terrain.
The faculty commended the analytical and methodical execution of the assigned tasks, noting the professionalism and competence demonstrated by Course Participants throughout the exercise. Further, the ‘Exercise CONCRETE JUNGLE’ continues to serve as a critical component of the DSCSC curriculum, enhancing joint operational planning capabilities and fostering inter-service cooperation in complex urban warfare environments.
